Juice Detox

The benefits of cleansing

During a juice fast or cleanse, a person limits their diet to only fresh vegetable and fruit juices and water for anywhere from a few days to several weeks. The fast focuses on freshly made, unpasteurized juice, so the usual bottle of orange juice that you would pick up at the corner store wouldn’t be allowed.

People generally either buy the juices from a manufacturer of juice cleanse products or purchase a juicer and make their own concoctions at home. According to the New York Times, the new cleanses contain about 1,000 to 1,200 calories a day and often include a nut-milk component to provide a small amount of fat and protein.

A juice detox can bring many and varied benefits, often beyond all expectations.

Here are just a few of them:

  • greater vitality and more consistent energy
  • weight loss
  • improved overall skin, hair and nail condition
  • improved sleep patterns
  • improved digestion and absorption of nutrients
  • better bowel health
  • strengthened immune system
  • greater emotional wellbeing and happiness

Doing a juice based cleanse can produce amazing results for your overall wellbeing. Furthermore, juice fasting can dramatically aid the removal of cellular waste. The effect of the removal of the cellular waste from the body is increased concentration and clarity of mind and an increase in general physical health.

Do Juice Cleanses Work?

The idea of several days with no solid food doesn’t sound like something one would voluntarily elect to try.  Still, juice cleanses are becoming increasingly popular and there are now several competing brands all trying to get your attention and custom.

Basically you only drink vegetable and fruit juice for as long as you’re willing to do it. Most cleanses are three days, five days, or a week . There are certain side effects that you may encounter when you commence your juice fast. When you start your fast your body will be trying to eliminate a large amount of toxins from its cells. The noticeable effects of this can include headaches, nausea and dizziness as the blood receives waste toxins from your cells. This is a natural part of the detox. Many people who fast believe that the fast is complete 2 days after this uncomfortable stage of the juice fast has ended. You may also experience bad breath and a ‘furry’ tongue as the body attempts to expel toxins through the throat and mouth.

That said, are these juices healthier than most soft drinks?  Yes. Compared to soda or orange juice–which can contain up to 40 grams of sugar per 12 ounce serving–the juice cleanse products are a vitamin-packed choice which can be used to supplement your diet.

Before starting any sort of fast, cleanse or new weight loss plan, it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor.
